Warsaw 2009: Sessions

Understanding nonresponse and attrition: Research from the UK Survey Design and Measurement Initiative

Planned on Wednesday, 8:30 - 10:30 in Room A3.

Coordinators:

  • Patrick Sturgis; University of Southampton, United Kingdom

Description:

The most serious and endemic threat to valid inference from surveys is differential nonresponse. Where sample members differ from those who are not contacted or who choose not to participate on analysis variables, estimators are biased and less precise than they would be under complete response. Yet the causes of nonresponse are still rather poorly understood. This session invites papers which focus on understanding the social and psychological mechanisms which lead to nonresponse, rather than on statistical methods for post-survey adjustment. Submissions which incorporate longitudinal and/or experimental designs are particularly encouraged.
