Warsaw 2009: Sessions
Analysing Attitudes Towards Migration with Large Comparative Survey Data (II)
Planned on Thursday, 11:00 - 13:00 in Room 1.3.
Coordinators:
- Marcel Coenders; University of Utrecht, Netherlands
Description:
Due to processes of modernization and migration, xenophobia and tensions between ethnic groups are high on the public and political agenda. In recent years, a growing number of data on interethnic relations and attitudes toward ethnic groups became available. In particular, large international survey data offer ample opportunities for cross-cultural research. An important issue in cross-cultural comparisons is the degree of equivalence of theoretical constructs. In the field of interethnic relations and attitudes, this issue is especially important, since many theoretical constructs such as national or ethnic identity, multiculturalism and attitudes towards specific groups of migrants may be strongly context dependent. In this session, we want to include papers that focus on the problems and solutions regarding the analysis of large scale comparative survey data in the field of interethnic relations and attitudes. We want to focus on different types of comparative data, such as (i) cross-national comparisons (ii) comparisons over time, and / or (iii) comparisons between different ethnic groups, such as ethnic majority and minority group(s).
