Job openings (several): Representatives from SESRI at ESRA conference in LausanneThe Social and Economic Survey Research Institute (SESRI; http://www.qu.edu.qa/sesri/) at Qatar University is experiencing significant growth and has several full-time survey research positions they are hiring for in Doha, Qatar. Representatives from SESRI will be at the ESRA conference in Lausanne. Persons who might be interested in meeting with one or more of them about the openings should email their CV/resume to me (David Howell, dahowell@umich.edu), either before or during the conference. All positions include a competitive tax-free salary, furnished accommodation, annual round trip air tickets for the employee and dependents, an educational allowance for the employee’s children, and annual leave. Job opening at JPSM, UMDThe Joint Program in Survey Methodology ( JPSM) seeks applications for an open rank faculty appointment from persons with research interests in survey statistics or survey methodology to start in Fall 2011. The JPSM is a graduate degree program teaching state-of-the-art principles and practices in the design, conduct, analysis and evaluation of sample surveys. The JPSM is a consortium of the University of Maryland, University of Michigan, Westat and federal statistical agencies. Studentships in Survey Methodology opportunities – University of EssexThe Department of Sociology at the University of Essex invites applications for fully-funded Masters and PhD studentships for 2011 entry. Studentships are open to all EU and UK citizens. Applications in all topic areas are possible but we are particularly interested in funding projects in Quantitative Sociology or Survey Methodology. Programmes are either for four years, including a one-year Masters, or three years, for applicants who already have research methods training at postgraduate level. Students can choose from several Masters degrees, leading on to a PhD based in the Department of Sociology (Quantitative Sociology) or ISER (Survey Methodology). WAPOR 64th Annual Conference – Public Opinion and the InternetThe World Association for Public Opinion Research ( WAPOR) will hold its 64th annual Conference on September 21-23, 2011 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The theme of this conference emphasizes how the Internet provides challenges and opportunities for public opinion scholars and how the internet is changing (the study of) public opinion. Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques – Institute for Social Research, University of MichiganThe Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques is a teaching program of the Survey Research Center, at the Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan. The mission of the Summer Institute is to provide rigorous and high quality graduate training in all phases of survey research. The program teaches state-of-the-art practice and theory in the design, implementation, and analysis of surveys. The Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques has presented courses on the sample survey since the summer of 1948, and has offered such courses every summer since. Graduate-level courses through the Program in Survey Methodology will be offered in two consecutive four-week sessions, from June 6 through July 1, and from July 5 through July 29. International Conference on Methods for Surveying and Enumerating Hard-to-Reach Populations (H2R 2012)H2R 2012 will take place on October 31 – November 3, 2012 at the Marriott Convention Center, New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S.A. The conference will bring together survey methodologists, sociologists, statisticians, demographers, ethnographers, policy analysts and other professionals from around the world to present new and innovative concepts and techniques for surveying hard to reach populations. The conference will address both the statistical and survey design aspects of including hard to reach groups. The dates for the call for submissions are the following: February 1-March 31 2011: Invited Call for Submissions; April 1-May 31 2011: Contributed Call for Submissions. 2011 ASA Spring Methodology ConferenceThe 2011 ASA Spring Methodology Conference will take place on May 18-20, 2011 at Tilburg University, in Tilburg, the Netherlands. The Conference is organized in Europe by the Department of Methodology and Statistics of Tilburg University, sponsored by the American Sociological Association Methodology Section and supported by the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences. CASS short course programme for 2010/11CASS (Courses in Applied Social Surveys) is a programme of short courses covering topics in survey design, data collection and data analysis methods. Courses are aimed at academic social scientists and applied researchers in government, market research and the independent and voluntary sectors. CASS is part of the ESRC National Centre for Research Methods. Teaching is interactive and responsive to course participants’ needs. All courses include practical sessions or computer workshops to enable participants to put the learned methods into practice. Dutch Parliamentary Election Studies 1971-2006: Cumulative data-set and documentationThe Department of Political Science and Research Methods, University of Twente, in cooperation with DANS, has published a cumulative data-set that incorporates the Dutch Parliamentary Election Studies ( DPES) conducted between 1971 and 2006. The DPES 1971-2006 cumulative data-set provides directly accessible information on change and stability in electoral behavior and political orientations in the Netherlands. The data comprise the more frequently asked questions of these Dutch Parliamentary Election Studies. DPES data and documentation can also be searched through, browsed, analyzed and downloaded via the DANS EASY online analysis tool, accessible at: http://nesstar.dans.knaw.nl/webview/. New release of ESS1-ESS4New editions of data for ESS Rounds 1 to 4 are now available from the ESS Data Web Site, http://ess.nsd.uib.noIn the new edition of ESS4, data from Ireland and Lithuania have been added. In addition, the cumulative datafile for ESS1-4 has been released. The cumulative data are available from a new tool, the ESS Cumulative Data Wizard, where users can customise their own subsets of data in different formats. For ESS rounds 1 to 4 there has been an upgrade of the harmonised variables for highest level of education.
